April 17-19 Casa Lienzo Residency Show: “Viva Dyslexico”

ARTIST STATEMENT
Viva Dyslexico! As a Mexican American dyslexic artist, I live and create between two languages, two cultures, and two ways of processing the world. Dyslexia isn’t just a learning difference. It is a lens that distorts and illuminates, a glitch that opens unexpected doors. This work is rooted in translation, not just of language, but of thought, memory, and identity. In this series, I draw from Mexican imagery tied to my childhood: lotería cards, papel picado, and familiar phrases I used to mix up-using them to visualize the tension and beauty of in-betweenness. T he burned line becomes a metaphor for persistence. Dyslexia, once seen as a limitation, has become a source of insight and invention. Viva Dyslexico! is both a celebration and a challenge: an invitation to see neurodivergence not as a deficit, but as a different kind of fluency.

DECLARACIÓN DEL ARTISTA
¡Viva Dyslexico! Como artista disléxica mexicoamericana, vivo y creo entre dos idiomas, dos culturas y dos maneras de procesar el mundo. La dislexia no es solo una dificultad de aprendizaje; es una lente que distorsiona e ilumina, una falla que abre puertas inesperadas. Esta obra se basa en la traducción, no solo del lenguaje, sino también del pensamiento, la memoria y la identidad. En esta serie, me inspiro en imágenes mexicanas vinculadas a mi infancia: cartas de lotería, papel picado y frases familiares que solía mezclar, utilizándolas para visualizar la tensión y la belleza de la inmediatez. La línea quemada se convierte en una metáfora de la persistencia. Dislexia, antes vista como una limitación, se ha convertido en una fuente de comprensión e invención. ¡Viva Dysléxico! Es a la vez una celebración y un desafío: una invitación a ver la neurodivergencia no como un déficit, sino como un tipo diferente de f luidez.

Letters dance,
confused in her mind.
But through the illustrative stroke,
they all find meaning
